Carchex is the extended warranty company that I use. I was very pleased with the account manager I worked with. So far (knock on wood) I haven’t had to make a claim. Here are 3 tips they give when you buy an extended car warranty.
1) Know your responsibilities as they are outlined in the agreement and follow them to the letter. Remember that your extended car warranty is only an agreement, and not an entitlement. To qualify for coverage, there are certain things you’ll have to do. For instance, know which systems require regular maintenance and keep detailed records of any and all service rendered on the vehicle.
2) Understand which parts are considered wearable or mere maintenance items. Not every repair is covered by the average warranty. For instance, oil or air filters, brake shoes and pads, shock absorbers or struts, tires, belts and hoses typically aren’t covered.
3) Know what repairs are covered and for how long. Many consumers misinterpret the terms of their warranty. If you’re not 100 percent clear on the definition of words such as drive-train, power-train and other electrical components, consult knowledgeable agents from a reputable organization, such as CARCHEX.com. Additionally, remember that time and mileage conditions may apply to certain systems and components of your vehicle and not others.
The representative you speak to when you call about an extended car warranty should be more than willing to explain all of the above. If not you should move on to a different company, until you find a representative who is upfront and takes the time you need.
